Lugazi Diocese is one of the nineteen Catholic Dioceses in Uganda. It was inaugurated on 23rd February 1997, with the Rt. Rev. Matthias Ssekamanya as its very first Bishop. The head of Lugazi Diocese is Bishop Christopher Kakooza, who took over from Bishop Matthias Ssekamanya on 3.1.2015. It has Pontiano ηηondwe (one of the Uganda Martyrs) as its Patron saint.
The work of propagating the Word of God to Christians in Lugazi Diocese has been the combined effort of both local and missionary priests as well as religious men and women.

Christoper Kakooza was appointed Bishop of Lugazi on 4 November 2014. He was installed as Bishop of Lugazi on 3 January 2015 by Bishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga Bishop of the Archdiocese of Kampala. He succeeded Bishop Emeritus Mattias Ssekamaanya, who retired, as the Ordinary of Lugazi Diocese. [
Caritas Lugazi is the socio economic development arm of the Diocese of Lugazi mandated to design and implement development activities in the Diocese. It aims at improving the social and economic conditions of the people irrespective of their cultures, gender, religious and political affiliations. Caritas Lugazi embraces an approach to human development that is integral and ecological with programmes that are oriented to the most vulnerable and marginalized people to ensure sustainable development by respecting the environment, human health and well-being, and fostering employment creation.
